Thoughts from Everyone: Red Line

The “Thoughts from Everyone” series is a collection of discussions and analyses of the current system contributed by other transit fans that I personally find interesting. For a full index with ideas on all topics, see here.

This post includes discussions of the Red Line (RL).

Note: If a discussion is largely about the entire Red Line but also has a particular focus on a region that it serves, it may be listed in both this page and another relevant “Thoughts from Everyone” page, with a brief note.

Red Line Transformation Program Discussions

The Red Line Transformation (OLT) Program aims to improve all aspects of the line to enable greater speed, capacity and reliability. It involves new CRRC cars and upgrades to signals, Alewife crossover, Longfellow Viaduct, and yards. The program aims for Red Line trains to run every 3 minutes on the trunk (Alewife – JFK/UMass), and 6 minutes on each branch.

Discussion of RLT’s headways and signal upgrades (F-Line to Dudley, April 2024)

  • F-Line mentions the target headways of RLT, detailed mechanisms of signal modifications, and how they enable better frequencies by reducing “congestion-induced slow zones”. (The comment was written in context of the Orange Line, but the same principle applies to the Red Line.)
